Care Instructions

General guidance to help you prepare for and recover from common dental procedures. Your dentist will always provide instructions specific to your treatment — the information below is intended as a helpful supplement, not a substitute.

Please note: The guidance on this page is general in nature. Your dentist will provide specific pre-operative and post-operative instructions tailored to your procedure and health needs. Always follow the personalized instructions given to you by your care team. If you have questions about your care at any time, please contact us.

Extractions & Wisdom Teeth

Before Your Appointment

  • Continue all regular medications unless your dentist advises otherwise.
  • If sedation has been arranged, your care team will provide specific fasting and transportation instructions in advance.
  • Wear comfortable clothing with sleeves that can be easily rolled up.
  • Have soft foods ready at home for the days following your procedure.

After Your Procedure

  • Some minor bleeding and swelling is normal and usually subsides within a few days.
  • Rest for the remainder of the day and avoid strenuous activity as directed by your dentist.
  • Stick to soft, cool foods and avoid using a straw during the initial healing period.
  • Your care team will advise you on when and how to resume brushing near the treatment area.
  • Take any prescribed or recommended medications as directed by your dentist.

Dental Implants

Before Your Appointment

  • Your dentist will review your 3D imaging and treatment plan with you before the procedure.
  • Disclose all medications, supplements, and any changes in your health before surgery.
  • If sedation is planned, follow the specific preparation instructions provided by your care team.
  • Arrange for someone to drive you home if sedation will be used.

After Your Procedure

  • Mild swelling and discomfort near the implant site is normal during the first few days.
  • Follow the specific dietary guidelines provided by your dentist for the healing period.
  • Avoid placing pressure on the implant site while it heals.
  • Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments — they are important for monitoring healing.
  • Your dentist will let you know when you can resume normal brushing and flossing around the area.

Crowns, Veneers & Restorations

Before Your Appointment

  • No special preparation is typically required for most restoration appointments.
  • Let your dentist know about any sensitivity or discomfort in the area being treated.
  • For same-day CEREC restorations, plan for a longer appointment — your restoration is designed, milled, and fitted in one visit.

After Your Procedure

  • Mild sensitivity to hot or cold is common for the first few days and usually resolves on its own.
  • Avoid very hard or sticky foods for the first day or two to allow the restoration to fully set.
  • Resume your normal brushing and flossing routine — good hygiene helps your restoration last.
  • Contact us if your bite feels uneven or if sensitivity persists beyond the first week.

Root Canal Treatment

Before Your Appointment

  • Continue your regular medications unless otherwise instructed.
  • Eat a normal meal before your appointment, as the treated area may be numb for several hours afterward.
  • Let your dentist know if you have any questions or concerns before the procedure begins.

After Your Procedure

  • Some tenderness around the treated tooth is normal for a few days.
  • Avoid chewing on the treated side until any temporary filling or crown is replaced with the permanent restoration.
  • Take any recommended pain relief as directed by your dentist.
  • Attend your follow-up appointment for the permanent restoration — this step protects the treated tooth long-term.

Teeth Whitening

Before Your Appointment

  • A cleaning appointment before whitening helps ensure the best results.
  • Let your dentist know about any existing sensitivity before treatment.

After Your Procedure

  • Some temporary tooth sensitivity is common and typically fades within a day or two.
  • Your dentist may recommend avoiding certain foods and drinks that can stain during the first 24–48 hours.
  • Follow the specific care instructions provided with any take-home whitening kits.
